SEM Center: A Haven for Diaspora Cultural Heritage in Yerevan
The “SEM Center for Diaspora Armenian Culture” is set to open in Yerevan following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the RA Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport (ESCS) and the SEM Foundation. This partnership marks a significant institutional shift in preserving and valuing Armenian cultural assets created outside the republic.
Preserving Legacy, Empowering the Future The initiative focuses on collecting and consolidating the Armenian cultural heritage of the Diaspora—including artworks, archives, and literary-intellectual production—within Armenia. Minister Zhanna Andreasyan emphasized that this aligns with the national strategy to establish Armenia as the ultimate sanctuary where the creative output of the global Armenian community is not only preserved but also made accessible for public engagement and academic research.
More Than a Museum: A Creative Hub Founders Krikor Beledian and Movses Hergelian describe SEM as more than just a repository. It is envisioned as a multidisciplinary platform where the “polyphonic” identity of the Diaspora acts as a catalyst for contemporary creative thought. The center aims to foster a modern Armenian-language intellectual sphere, bridging individual experiences with international cultural standards. Under the agreement, the state will provide the premises, while the foundation will oversee renovations and long-term management to ensure innovative cultural programming.
